Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
